Concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus didn’t stop Independence Day celebrations, though they did look different this year than in years past. Last year, Washington DC’s “Salute to America” drew thousands to the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial, and this year, President Trump promised another celebration to remember. Here’s what Independence Day 2020 looked like in Washington, DC.
Independence Day 2020 Brought Fireworks to DC
Not to be outdone by years past or overshadowed by the tumult of the past few months, Washington, DC once again hosted an Independence Day for the record books.
Flight & military demonstrations
The event kicked off with a variety of flight demonstrations by several branches of the military. Of special note were the US Air Force Thunderbirds and the US Navy Blue Angels. Performances were made by historic crafts like P-51s and B-29s, as well as modern planes.
An amazing fireworks display
The night ended with one of the largest-ever fireworks productions by two of the country’s premier fireworks companies. Rockets were launched from an area over a mile wide, from the south end of the West Potomac Park to north of the Lincoln Memorial, as well as on the grounds of the Washington Monument. The show was visible throughout DC and parts of Northern Virginia and contained over 10,000 fireworks.
More than 800 acres of the National Mall and Memorial Parks were available for viewers, including the Jefferson Memorial, World War II Memorial, Washington Monument, National Mall ground, East Potomac Park, and more.
Remarks by the president
Of course, the event wouldn’t have been complete without a presidential speech. President Trump addressed viewers from the South Lawn of the White House in a Salute to America that touted the successes and strengths of our country.
